Blackberry Mint Mojito

The mojito is a drink to make slowly and enjoy slowly. Blackberries turn it purple and make it more serious than the lime-and-mint original. Take the rum out and add a little more lime and soda for a drink just as good.

What you'll need

  • 20 fresh mint leaves
  • 0.5 cup blackberries
  • 2 oz fresh lime juice (60 ml)
  • 2 tbsp sugar or honey
  • 4 oz white rum, or 4 oz more sparkling water for the alcohol-free glass (120 ml)
  • 1 cup club soda (240 ml)

How to make it

  1. Gently press the mint, blackberries, lime juice and sugar in the bottom of each glass. Do not shred the mint.

  2. Fill with crushed ice and pour in the rum, if using. Stir from the bottom.

  3. Top with club soda and add a mint bouquet.

  4. Glass: Two tall glasses. Garnish: A mint bouquet and a blackberry on a pick.

Chef's secrets

Slap the mint in your palm before it goes in the glass; it should be pressed, not torn.

Crushed ice makes the drink; wrap cubes in a towel and hit them.

Make ahead

Not a make-ahead drink; mint turns bitter.
