Cognac Sidecar

The sidecar is a quietly grand drink: two parts cognac, one part orange liqueur, one part lemon, shaken cold. It is the right drink for a good bottle that is waiting for an occasion. Sugar only half the rim so each sip can be sharp or sweet.

  • 2 oz orange liqueur (60 ml)
  • 2 oz fresh lemon juice (60 ml)
  • sugar for half the rim, orange twists

How to make it

  1. Wet half the rim of each coupe with lemon and dip in sugar. Chill.

  2. Shake the liquids hard with ice for 12 seconds.

  3. Double-strain into the coupes and add a twist.

  4. Glass: Chilled coupes. Garnish: A sugared half-rim and an orange twist.

Chef's secrets

A VS or VSOP cognac is plenty; the lemon does the rest.

Reduce the liqueur if you like it sharper.
