Woodsmoke Toddy

For the adults standing at the end of the driveway with the candy bowl. Hot cider does the work that hot water does in an ordinary toddy and does it better. Add the whiskey at the end, off the heat, so none of it cooks away.

What you'll need

  • 5 oz apple cider (150 ml)
  • 2 teaspoons honey (10 ml)
  • 1.5 teaspoons fresh lemon juice (7 ml)
  • 1.5 oz bourbon or rye whiskey (45 ml)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 lemon wheel studded with 3 cloves
  • 5 cups apple cider (1.2 L)
  • 0.33 cup honey (80 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (30 ml)
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1.5 cups bourbon or rye whiskey (360 ml)

How to make it

  1. Warm the cider with the cinnamon stick in a small pan until steaming.

  2. Stir in the honey and lemon juice until the honey dissolves.

  3. Pour the whiskey into a warmed mug and top with the hot cider. Float the lemon wheel on top.

  4. Warm the cider, honey, lemon and cinnamon in a slow cooker on low for 2 hours. Add the whiskey just before serving, or let people add their own.

  5. Glass: Glass mug. Garnish: A clove-studded lemon wheel and the cinnamon stick.

Chef's secrets

Warm the mug with hot water first so the drink stays hot.

Maple syrup can stand in for honey.

Make ahead

The cider base holds on warm in a slow cooker for 3 hours. Keep the whiskey beside it rather than in it.
