Glowing Grin Cream Sodas
Two ingredients and a marker pen. The faces go on the outside of the cup, the float goes inside, and the orange glows through the grin. Let the children draw their own; it keeps them busy for exactly as long as it takes you to find the ice cream scoop.
What you'll need
- 6 clear cups, about 12 oz (350 ml) each
- 3 cups vanilla ice cream, 6 generous scoops (about 400 g)
- 6 cups orange soda, well chilled (1.4 L)
- whipped cream, to top
How to make it
Draw a pumpkin face on the outside of each cup with a black marker, or cut eyes and a grin from black paper and tape them on.
Put a generous scoop of ice cream in each cup.
Tilt the cup and pour the orange soda down the side, about 1 cup (240 ml) each. It will foam, so pause and top up.
Add whipped cream if you like and hand them out with a spoon and a straw.
Glass: Clear plastic or glass cups. Garnish: A little whipped cream; a mint leaf for a pumpkin stem.
Chef's secrets
Orange sherbet instead of vanilla ice cream gives a deeper orange and a tangier float.
Cold soda foams less. Keep the bottles in the fridge until the last second.
Good to know
Draw the faces and pre-scoop the ice cream onto a tray in the freezer a day ahead. Assemble as the children arrive.
